Sony releases new update for PlayStation 5

It’s system firmware update day, and Sony has released PlayStation 5 system update 21.02-04.50.00 for its next-generation platform.

Nintendo has announced a new Switch system update, and Sony has followed suit with a new PS5 firmware upgrade. The release notes are brief, as they are with most firmware upgrades for Sony’s systems, and merely mention enhanced system performance. However, like with other system updates, the update is likely to include some under-the-hood modifications. The release notes for this system upgrade are listed below.

The PlayStation 5 is now available worldwide. The PlayStation 4 was released in November of last year. Sony has sold over 13.4 million copies worldwide since the console’s introduction.

“Today is a historic day for the PlayStation brand, and all of us at SIE are thrilled to celebrate the launch of PlayStation 5 with our community of fans, game developers, and industry partners,” said Jim Ryan, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, at the time of the console’s release last year. “The PS5 is a truly next-generation system that ushers in a new age of gaming.” I’m ecstatic about the new worlds that gamers will begin to explore today, and I’m equally ecstatic about the lineup of PS5 titles that will continue to advance the gameplay experience. We are honored to collaborate with such a remarkable group of game creators from across the world. Their imagination will open up endless possibilities for what the future of gaming on PS5 can be.”

Whereas Microsoft’s Xbox Series X for this generation is obviously focused on graphics horsepower, Sony is taking a different approach with its focus on dazzling your senses in many ways. This isn’t to imply the PS5 isn’t powerful; on the contrary, Sony is looking for something unique – something that gamers can see, hear, and feel.
