The internet has a new reigning champion. According to Cloudflare, the cloud services firm, TikTok was the most popular web domain in the world in 2021.
In Cloudflare’s annual rankings, the social video app crossed Google and all of its properties for the first time. TikTok was ranked eighth in 2020, after Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix, and Amazon, but it quickly rose to the top during a covid-fueled spike in popularity.
During the pandemic, TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese business ByteDance, became a staple of the internet and worldwide young culture. The app is also banned in India, which was formerly its largest global market, adding to the new honor’s significance. TikTok claims to have one billion monthly active users worldwide.

The US government tried—and failed—to prohibit TikTok under Donald Trump’s administration, and ByteDance’s ties with the Chinese government have created concern. Joe Biden’s administration is presently investigating TikTok and other foreign-based applications’ ties to unfriendly nations, and the results of a Commerce Department investigation are scheduled to be released in the coming weeks.
TikTok, a subject of constant cultural intrigue, trends, memes, and music, continues to dominate headlines in the United States. If Cloudflare’s data is any indication, TikTok has become ingrained in people’s daily lives all across the world.
